Olive oil for Cretans is a significant part of their culture and an unmatched gift from mother nature. Long before the systematic cultivation of the olive started in the Minoan era (3400-1200BC), indigenous populations on the island collected and fed, among others, on the fruits of the wild olive tree “elidia” (olea oleaster) present on the island from the Neolithic era, some 6 millennia ago.
Ηaving grown up and worked within our olive groves and tasted its aromas and flavours we have learned to appreciate the uniqueness of Homer’s “green gold”. ELIDIA and its people have ambitions that go beyond offering an olive oil with a level of acidity below 0,8% necessary to categorize it as extra virgin (evoo). Living on an island where 85-90%[1] of total olive oil production meets the above criteria does not make the above goal a serious challenge. What we are after is exceptionality.
Facing the challenge, ELIDIA has willingly decided to distance itself from the general trend adopting olive oil as a low-price product at the expense of its quality. Having tasted the finest, we spare no efforts in providing our customers with anything less than that. Perfection requires attention to the details, which in turn takes a lot of confidence on what you do and persistence to your vision. Our passion for olive oil and a deep appreciation of the blessing to have been born and raised within wondrous and still unpolluted Cretan nature, charge us with the most welcome duty to introduce to the rest of the world the miracle of Cretan olive oil in its purest form. In the exact same form we have it on our table and feed to our children. Welcome to Elidia’s family!
